This Week’s Musical Inspirations: A Journey Through Country, Blues, and Rock

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, where I’m excited to share some of the artists who have deeply inspired me over the years. Music has a way of shaping our stories, and these legends from different genres have left a lasting mark on my creative journey. From the heartfelt harmonies of country to the soulful depths of blues and the electrifying energy of rock, let’s dive into the sounds that have fueled my passion.

Starting with country, The Oak Ridge Boys have been a constant source of inspiration. Their rich vocal harmonies and storytelling craft set a gold standard in the genre. Their music feels like a warm, familiar conversation that stays with you long after the song ends. Whether it’s their classic hits or lesser-known gems, their influence is undeniable in shaping how emotion and narrative blend seamlessly in music.

Most people know them as a country group, but if you've followed their career, you know they've never been easy to put into one category. They've recorded country, gospel, pop, and songs with strong rock influences. What always impressed me wasn't just the style of music—they could make every song believable.

Their harmonies are incredible, and their musicianship is first class. Every performance seems to come from the heart, creating a genuine and powerful connection with the audience. This combination of skill and emotion left a lasting impression on me as a young musician and continues to inspire me to this day. Their dedication to heartfelt music-making serves as a meaningful example of true artistry in performance.

When I first heard Pete Drake playing steel guitar on the Oak’s recordings, I had to learn that instrument, so I took up the steel guitar in 1973.

Looking back now, I realize they taught me something that's stayed with me throughout my own career.

Moving into the blues realm, Eric Clapton stands out as a master of expression through guitar and voice. His ability to convey deep feeling with every note is something I’ve admired and learned from over the years. Clapton’s work bridges traditional blues with a modern sensibility, inspiring countless musicians to explore vulnerability and power in their sound.

No musical journey would be complete without mentioning Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll. His charisma and pioneering style revolutionized music and culture. Elvis’s energy and stage presence bring a timeless spirit that continues to inspire artists across generations. His boldness in blending genres and breaking barriers opened doors for so many, including myself.

These artists represent more than just music; they embody passion, innovation, and authenticity. I hope their stories and sounds inspire you as much as they inspire me.
