This week I found myself reaching for my old metal body resonator again. It's funny how certain guitars seem to have their own personality. Some days they fight you, and some days they seem to write the song for you.
One of the questions I get asked is, "What guitar are you playing?" So I thought I'd start sharing some of the instruments that help create my sound.
This Week's Guitar: My Metal Body Resonator
Today I wanted something with a little more bite, so the metal body resonator came off the wall. There's something about that guitar that makes me play differently. It doesn't let me fake anything. Every note has to mean something.
There's just something about a metal body resonator that you can't get from any other guitar.
The first note has a voice all its own—bright, gritty, and full of character. It's the kind of sound that's been part of the blues since the early days, when resonator guitars were built to project more volume before electric amplification became common. Today they're loved just as much for their unmistakable tone.
Whenever I want that authentic blues feel, this guitar is one of the first I reach for. Whether I'm playing slide or fingerstyle, it has a raw personality that inspires me every time I pick it up.
